Run Report – 2022 Atlanta Snow Run

A brisk, bitterly cold morning in the parking lot at Albertsons stated this snow run. We prepared for icy roads, muddy pot holes, and a long drive with no fuel stations. We explained the importance of airing down and going slow. We discussed GMRS and HAM communications.

Then, we loaded the crowds into the rigs and pulled out. Micke took the head of the pack, and Christian was the tail. Even with communication worked out in the parking lot, Christian was unable to talk to anyone; good job Christian, I bet everyone enjoyed the silence.

At Mack’s Creek, we aired down, used the outhouse, and took some photos of the clean (aka pre-mud) rigs. There were 24 rigs in this group (as 14 had opted to leave before the public run). It was a small enough group that we kept it all together for the ride up to Atlanta. And, off we go.

In years past, the road between Mack’s Creek and Twin Springs had been very muddy and riddled with pot holes. This year, it appeared to be on track for the same. Yet, somewhere near the middle of Arrowrock Reserve, the ground became frozen and a bit smoother. By the time we got to Twin Springs, it seemed like someone had paved the road in an icy snow. It was refreshingly smooth.

The sun was still cresting over the hilltops as we continued past Twin Springs. Photo opportunities abounded; frozen waterfalls, steamy hot springs, and large ice flows were most popular.

We made great time up to the Beaver Lodge where we had lunch. We were an hour earlier this year, and it seemed we flooded the kitchen. Eventually got their orders and we were headed back to Boise.

The road home is the same, but the sun is on the other side of everything. Waterfalls take on different colors, sunsets add nice colors to snow covered mountains, and the mud is thawed.

We made it back to the air up spot before dark, and the sun was setting quickly. It was pitch black before getting back to the highway. It was a great day.
